Chris Benn took his camera to the second semi-final of the Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup, between Spelthorne Sports and Harefield United. Spelthorne had reached this stage of the competition with an impressive away win against Hampton & Richmond Borough in the quarter finals. Harefield United had also scored freely in their quarter final with a 5-2 away victory over Broadfields United.

Some aerial ballet

An evenly contested but goalless first half saw the visitors coming closest to scoring. Richard Pacquette cleverly beat the Spelthorne offside trap but was foiled in the act of shooting by a last-ditch tackle. Then, in the last action of the half, the Spelthorne keeper, Henry Poole, pushed a well hit freekick from Thomas Payne onto his crossbar.

Harefield United went ahead in the opening minutes of the second period, through skipper Sean Mangan’s well struck low shot on the turn. Femi Ogunsola’s spectacular strike, after an hour’s play, doubled their lead.

Spelthorne did not give up and subjected Harefield to increasing pressure in the last quarter of the match. They were particularly dangerous from several testing corner kicks, which were impressively dealt with by the visitors’ stand-in custodian, Cian Moore, and his defence.
