Walking Football

A slower version of the beautiful game

Don't hang up your boots just yet!

It's time to stop the talking and get to walking... Walking Football that is. A popular and growing format of the game, Walking Football is aimed at encouraging older adults to play football again on a regular basis.

As simple as the name suggests, Walking Football really is just football at walking pace. But don't let that fool you; It carries all the emotion, passion and excitement of a regular game and still requires skills such as accurate passing, good positional play and strong tactical knowledge.

The game is small sided, with no running on or off the ball, very little contact and kick-ins instead of throw-ins. With less stress on the body and no real sudden change of direction or cutting movements, the game allows participants to play without apprehension.

It has become increasingly popular and is designed to help people keep an active lifestyle, as well as to support getting people back into football who have stopped due to age or injury.

Older people, in particular, have seen many benefits; lower heart rate and blood pressure, less fat, more muscle and better mobility.

Since Middlesex FA launched Walking Football in 2014, we now run over 25 sessions on a weekly basis with just under 500 players taking part every week.

In addition, we now run our own Walking Football League, which consists of 3 different divisions running once a month across different Boroughs in the County.
