SHIRE UNITED EXIT FROM FA SUNDAY CUP

The Second Round of this season’s FA Sunday Cup was contested on Sunday, 13th November and your roving team visited the tie between Shire United and Frimley Green (Sunday) which was played at Spelthorne Sports Club.

An evenly contested and entertaining game, on a pleasant sunlit autumn morning, resulted in a 3-1 victory for the visitors from Surrey, who went ahead inside the first minute of the match.   Shire United equalised in the 20th minute but Frimley Green regained the lead on the stroke of half time.   Shire United pressed for another equaliser but Frimley Green clinched victory, with a third goal 4 minutes from time.

Frimley Green went ahead in the first minute, through Nic Cardini’s low cross-shot, from wide on the left.

Then Nic Cardini picked up a loose ball, ran on and squared it for Mark Thomas, whose diving header flew just wide.

Shire United hit back and Anthony Oakes netted an equaliser from a narrow angle, in the 20th minute.

...and makes the score 1-1

 Frimley Green’s Toby Jannaway was brought down outside the home penalty box by Aaron Oakes.   Nic Cardini cleared the crossbar with the subsequent free kick.

Toby Jannaway made a run into the United box and fed Mike Siemak, whose low shot was saved by keeper, Gary Ross.

Then a good move, involving Frimley Green’s Cameron Miller, Nic Cardini and Toby Jannaway ended with the latter scuffing his shot to the keeper.

At the other end Guy Hollis burst through but fired over the bar.

Danny Turner (69) crosses...

In the 45th minute, Danny Turner intercepted a Shire United pass and set up Dan Bone to tap the ball home and put Frimley Green back into the lead.

Frimley Green custodian, Jamie Cunningham made a good save at Lewis Flatman’s feet.   Then Anthony Oakes collected the ball on the wing and worked into a good position but his cross was cleared.  

A good run by Frimley Green’s Nic Cardini was halted by the weight of defensive numbers.

Shire United continued their search for an equaliser.   Jamie Lee Giuseppi slipped the ball past the goalkeeper but it passed beyond the far post.

Lewis Flatman was again foiled by keeper Jamie Cunningham.   Jamie then gathered Charles Hare’s dangerous low cross.

Guy Hollis showed good control and burst through the Frimley Green defence but was eventually dispossessed.   Guy then nodded a good cross back into the goalmouth but it was hacked away.

Shire United pushed forward with further attacks but Nic Cardini made the game safe for Frimley Green in the 86th minute, when he took advantage of the resulting amount of available space and netted with ease.

The other Middlesex affiliated club playing at this stage, last season’s finalists, Highgate Albion, won through to Round 3.   They beat Hatch Lane 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out, after a 1-1 home draw.   They have been paired with FC Beaconsfield, away, on 11th December.
