Development Groups

The Development Groups are regional "stepping stones" for referees who show promise in the early stages of their refereeing career. There will be Development Groups in three "regions" within Middlesex. The North region will be based in Enfield, the Central region in Harrow and the South region in Feltham.

Objective:  The Referee Development Groups are set up to aid progression and offer support to those Level 7 or 8 officials that have the desire and talent to progress to the higher levels of the game.

Purpose: To identify young referees who have the potential to move into the Promotion scheme and the MCFA Referee Academy.

Duties of the Group Co-ordinators:

  • To provide suitable training, advice, guidance and information as necessary to ensure the purpose of the group is achieved.
  • To identify mentors for the referees in their Group and to offer support to these mentors.

  • To ensure regular contact is maintained with the Referee Development Manager with updates on the progress of the mentees in their group.

  • To organise meetings and training sessions (including arranging venues, dates, etc) for the mentees.

Referee mentors within the Development Groups will:

  • Offer support and guidance to their referees throughout the season.
  • Help their referees progress into the promotion scheme.

  • Help their referees progress towards the MCFA Referee Academy.

  • Ensure there is regular contact with their group area co-ordinator on the mentees' performance.

  • Attempt to watch each mentee a minimum of three matches a season. This could also include inviting your mentee to your matches, going together/as a group to watch a game, etc...

  • Support mentees at scheduled referee development workshops.

New Referees will be expected to meet certain expectations as part of their membership of the Development Groups:

  • To progress onto the promotion scheme within an agreed period of time.
  • To have aspirations to advance into the MCFA Referee Academy.

  • To show desire to progress to the highest levels of the game.

  • Regularly attend scheduled referee development workshops.

  • Have regular contact with their mentor to discuss match situations in order to gain support and advice.

Entry to the Development Groups is by invitation only.  Any referee interested in finding out more with a view to joining a Development Group should contact Referee Development Manager Ray Herb either by email or by calling 020 8515 6910.
