BRENTFORD B BEAT SPIRITED BEDFONT SPORTS IN SENIOR CUP
This season’s Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup has progressed to the second round and 3 matches were scheduled for last midweek. However, the weather had a say in this and the 2 games due to be played on Tuesday, 8th November were postponed, because of waterlogged pitches. However, the tie on the following evening, between Brentford B and Bedfont Sports went ahead as planned, on the excellent 3G surface at Bedfont Rec. and your roving team attended.
The spectators were well entertained by an interesting match. The young Brentford team played an attractive quick passing style and enjoyed the bulk of the possession. However, the Bedfont Sports team, who are currently in a transitional stage, after a poor start to their season, fought well and contributed significantly to the entertainment. They scored the game’s opening goal in the 5th minute and retained their lead for most of the first half.
Brentford B equalised in the 40th minute and then went ahead, seconds before half time. They increased their lead 8 minutes into the second period but Bedfont pulled the score back to 3-2, 6 minutes later. Brentford then scored twice more to record a convincing victory. However, Bedfont Sports should be very pleased with their performance.
Bedfont Sports survived a spell of early Brentford pressure and then took the lead after 4 minutes’ play, when Sam Evans broke through the middle and placed his shot firmly past the advancing keeper, into the corner of the goal.
Then a good move involving Sam Evans and Steve Ngunga finished with Brentford’s keeper Roco Rees taking Tayshan Hayden-Smith’s cross low down.
Most of the subsequent action during the first half took place in the Sports’ territory, as Brentford searched for an equaliser.
Angel Wariuh crossed low for Isaac Holland, whose shot was deflected for a corner. Then Kyreece Lisbie was tripped just outside the penalty box. Val Adedokun took the freekick, which was met by Nico Jones, whose diving header flew just wide.
Another Brentford freekick, to the right of the box, led to a succession of corners, the result of effective blocking or timely interceptions by Sport’s defenders.
Roy Syla crossed for Kyreece Lisbie, whose diving header brought an outstanding close-range save from Sports’ keeper, Cairo Richards.
In another Brentford attack, Kyreece fed Roy, whose subsequent cross just evaded Kyreece’s head. Then Michael Olakigbe released Kyreece who was frustrated by the advancing Cairo Richards.
Kyreece equalised for Brentford 5 minutes before the half time interval. His shot, from wide on the left, eluding keeper Cairo Richards, who appeared to be unsighted by a Brentford forward trying to reach the ball.
Isaac Holland put Brentford ahead in the 44th minute. He worked his way through the defence and Cairo Richards saved his initial shot before he netted the rebound.
Half time score: Brentford B 2 Bedfont Sports 1
Brentford remained on the offensive after the interval and forced several more corners. Michael Olakigbe scored their 3rd goal in the 54th minute. His first shot was also saved and he also netted the rebound.
Tayshan Hayden-Smith finished off a good Bedfont Sports’ move in the 59th minute, scoring with a shot from the edge of the box.
In another Bedfont Sports’ break, Sam Evans released Taysham through the middle and the keeper had to leave his area to kick clear.
Cairo Richards saved well from Brentford substitute, Alex Gilbert’s drive from around 20 yards.
Brentford increased their lead in the 75th minute. A penalty was awarded for a trip on Tony Yogane, just inside the area. Cairo saved Alex Gilbert’s spot kick but Roy Syla followed up to score.
Two minutes later, Nico Jones headed home from a corner kick for Brentford’s 5th goal.
Bedfont thought that they had scored a third goal in the 85th minute, when Sam Stewart headed Taysham’s cross home. However, the goal was disallowed for offside.
Result: Brentford B 5 Bedfont Sports 2
