MIDDLESEX WOMEN CONTINUE DEFENCE OF THEIR TITLE

Middlesex Women to play their second Southern Counties Cup Competition match of the season

Middlesex Women will play their second Southern Counties Cup Competition match of the season on Wednesday next 5th February 2020 (ko 7.45 pm). This is a vitally important game, away to Essex Women at Aveley FC’s splendid new Parkside ground.

Essex are enjoying a very successful season so far. They have won both of their matches, beating the Royal Air Force 5-0 at home and the Army by a single goal at Aldershot.

Earlier in the season we shared the points in a 2-2 draw with the Army, also at Aldershot.

Therefore, Essex only require a draw from our game on Wednesday to win the North Group and progress to the final. For us to do so, we must win at Aveley and then defeat the RAF at home, in our concluding group match on 19th February.

The top team in the group will contest the final with the winners of the South Group, which is comprised of Kent, Jersey, Sussex and the Royal Navy. An important match in this group is also scheduled for next Wednesday, with the Royal Navy hosting Kent. Kent have won both of their group games, against Sussex (4-0) and Jersey (6-0) and need a win from this, their last one, to be absolutely certain of qualifying for the final.

We are the current holders of the Southern Counties Championship trophy after beating Sussex 4-1 in last season’s final, which was played at Rectory Park. Our goals in that game, were scored by Ashley Cheatley (2), Chloe Sampson and Anya Kinnane.

Middlesex Women have only played their Essex counterparts once before in their 22 year history. This was in last season’s Southern Counties Competition group stages, when they came from behind 3 times, to win a memorable match by 4 goals to 3. Chloe Sampson hit the winning goal in the 90th minute. Our other goals that evening were netted by Ashley twice and Anya Kinnane.
