Middlesex to Host Southern Counties Competition Final

by Jim Taylor
County's women's representative side prepare to take on Sussex in the Southern Counties final.

The Southern Counties Competition Women’s final, between Middlesex FA and Sussex FA, will take place at our Rectory Park Headquarters on Wednesday 20th March 2019 (KO 7.45pm).

Sussex reached the final by winning the South Group, with a very impressive 100% record. They beat Kent at home (7-0), the Royal Navy away (3-1) and, finally, Jersey at home (6-0).

Top position in the North Group was much more fiercely contested and Middlesex’s place in the final was only secured when Essex beat the Army (4-2), in the last group match to be played.

Before this, Middlesex had drawn an epic match at Aldershot (3-3), in which the Army had come from behind to equalise three times. Then they beat Hertfordshire at home (2-0) before being involved in another thriller, at home, against Essex. They equalised 3 times before snatching a 4-3 win in the 90th minute.

The final group tables were:-

South Group  P W D L GF GA Pts
Sussex 3 3 0 0 16 1 9
Royal Navy 3 2 0 1 10 7 6
Kent 3 1 0 2 5 15 3
Jersey 3 0 0 3 2 10 0

North Group P W D L GF GA Pts
Middlesex 3 2 1 0 9 6 7
Essex 3 2 0 1 13 6 6
Army 3 1 1 1 11 8 4
Hertfordshire 3 0 0 3 1 14 0

Middlesex were runners up to Kent in this competition last season, when it was played in a single league format. Both counties were unbeaten, but we unfortunately, lost our title chance by conceding a late equaliser, in a 3-3 draw with the Royal Navy at Portsmouth.

Both counties have won the title twice previously, Sussex in 2010/11 and 2015/16 and Middlesex in 1998/99 and 2014/15.   Both counties have been runners up (or beaten finalists) on 4 occasions.
Kent has recorded the most successes to date (3). Other competition winners, apart from Sussex and Middlesex, have been the Army and London (2 each).

Why not come along to support your Women’s team on the 20th? Admission is free, refreshments are available and a programme will be issued. As stated above, kick-off is scheduled for 7.45pm.
