Middlesex FA kick-off Walking Football Festivals

    •

Former England striker Luther Blissett paid a visit to Powerleague Barnet as Middlesex FA launched a weekend of Walking Football Festivals across the country.

A series of matches were played between 12 teams from the surrounding area, introducing many to Walking Football for the first time.

The festival was one of 22 being contested in aid of The FA’s official charity partner, The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK.

Those present were also given the opportunity to meet with Blissett, who was on-hand to receive a cheque on behalf of the charity.

“It’s always very important that, whatever age you are, you keep yourself active,” said Blissett, a Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK ambassador.

“Not only are the Walking Football Festivals taking place during July a great way to do so, but they also raise awareness of serious health issues amongst the older generation.”

Andrew Perren, Middlesex FA’s Recreational Football Development Officer, added:

“Despite the soaring temperatures, it’s been a fantastic afternoon of Walking Football and I’d like to thank every one of the 80 plus individuals that have taken part today. This festival was put together on the back of the success of Walking Football in Middlesex over the past three years and it’s a fantastic way to bring together the ever-growing Walking Football community to raise money for a great cause."

A further eight Walking Football Festivals are scheduled to take place during July, with all funds raised going towards the funding of pioneering life, life-saving bowel cancer research.

Stephanie Moore MBE, Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK chairman, said:

“Bowel cancer remains the UK’s second highest killing cancer, claiming the lives of 44 people every day in the UK alone.  “The money you have raised will be vital in helping us beat bowel cancer sooner, so thank you.”
